In the bustling city, where the rhythm of life never slows down, a story unfolds – one of strength, transformation and discovery of a newfound passion. Meet Sri, a devoted 32 year-old mother of four boys, two of whom have special needs, whose life took a beautiful turn through YWCA’s Weaving Programme.
Sri’s path hasn’t always been smooth. With the weight of responsibilities on her shoulders, she longed for a moment of respite, a space where she could find solace amidst life’s challenges.
YWCA opened its doors to Sri, inviting her to join our Weaving Programme. At the Weaving Programme, Mums receive free training in the unique art of freeform weaving, which allows them to earn a flexible income by facilitating Weaving Experiences and selling woven merchandise.
Sri took her first steps into the world of weaving, feeling a mixture of nervousness and hope. And as she sat at the loom, she discovered a source of solace and an escape from the pressures of everyday life. The art of freeform weaving resonated deeply with her, unveiling a passion she had never anticipated. Since then, Sri’s journey has been filled with personal growth and empowerment– with each woven creation, her skills developed, and her confidence grew stronger.
“The Weaving Programme has given me much exposure to interesting opportunities that have helped me grow in my interpersonal skills such as communication and responsibility.” says Sri.

But what truly makes Sri’s story extraordinary is how she went from being a programme participant to becoming a radiant source of inspiration as a full-time staff member. YWCA recognised her immense talent and unwavering dedication. We extended a helping hand and invited Sri to share her passion and skills with others. Now, adorned with a sense of purpose, she weaves intricate wonders that she sells, and she generously imparts her wisdom through Weaving Experiences. In doing so, she sparks a burst of hope and resilience in all those fortunate enough to learn from her.
“I’ve gained lots of skills, knowledge, confidence, and self-esteem.” says Sri.
The impact of the weaving programme goes well beyond the loom. As Sri continues her journey through life, her relationships have grown and deepened. Every weaving session she facilitates becomes a valuable chance for individuals from different backgrounds to connect, support each other, and share their dreams. In these moments, Sri weaves together the stories of diverse individuals, creating a tapestry of solidarity and inspiration.
Sri has found herself to have improved relationships with her family and friends after starting in the YWCA Weaving Programme. She has since been able to communicate more effectively with them with her stronger people management skills.
Sri wants to encourage other mums who have been on similar journey as her,
“Do not be afraid to take the first step. Initially, you may feel that you have low self-esteem, but motivate yourself with positivity every day. Remind yourself that there is nothing you cannot do. If you haven’t tried it yet, of course you cannot do it, so taking the first step is essential to achieving something for your own benefit. This effort will also help you improve your relationships with family and friends.” says Sri.
