Meals-on-Wheels for Children

The YWCA Meals-on-Wheels for Children (MOWC) is a meals programme for children aged between five to 12 years from low-income families. Free nutritious halal dinners are delivered from 1.30 to 4.30pm to their homes or our partnering agencies daily from Mondays to Fridays, excluding public holidays.

Presently serving nearly 150 children, this programme was developed in 2006 in response to a Straits Times article entitled ‘Hungry No More’ highlighting how many children from low-income families had to struggle to go to bed daily with hunger pangs. The MOWC programme therefore endeavours to ensure, as far as possible, that children should not go to bed hungry – they should be “Hungry No More”!

Our current service boundaries include the Outram vicnity up to Jurong East, in areas along the west-bound MRT line such as Chinatown, Tiong Bahru, Redhill, Queenstown, and Commonwealth.

Children must fulfill the following criteria in order to qualify for the MOWC programme:

• Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident;
• Regardless of race, religion or gender;
• Child must be at least 5 years old and not older than 12 years old;
• Total household income should be less than $2,500 per month or less than $750 per capita (per person per household).

After successfully launching the MOWC programme at New Town Primary and Telok Kurau Primary in 2013, the YWCA has gone on to work with more schools such as Farrer Park Primary, Fuhua Primary, Queenstown Primary, River Valley Primary and Yuhua Primary to provide for students under the Ministry of Education’s Financial Assistance Scheme and even their siblings and elderly relations who meet our service criteria.

Contact Ms Mandy Lim at 6223 1227 or by email to find out more about the programme. MOWC application forms can also be downloaded here and should provide as many necessary documents (listed on page 2 of the form) as well as a valid social report.

For potential volunteers who are inspired to make a difference in the lives of the children, come volunteer with us!  The YWCA would also like to take this opportunity to ask for your support in donations as we reach out to touch these young lives and to make a difference in their world. Just $2.50 pays for the cost of one child’s meal so donate today!
