Empowering Mums 2 2016

 em logolg

An initiative of YWCA, Singapore’s oldest women’s organisation

Launched in 2015, YWCA’s Empowering Mums project is dedicated to helping back-to-work mothers from low-income families gain the skills, support and confidence they need to be successfully employed through a free transformative 8-week journey of group work and workshops culminating in a makeover and graduation, with periodic employment opportunities.

Registration for Empowering Mums 2 now open and the following are available for download:

Please email the completed application form, complete with social report to Ms Ling by Friday, 14 October.

From May to August 2015, YWCA launched its pilot Empowering Mums project as part of its 140th anniversary. 16 mothers eventually graduated from the 8-week project and within six months, 14 of them (or 87.5%) have been engaged in formal or informal employment and/or have enrolled in a dedicated course of study. 7 of them further underwent some form of skills upgrading. One year on, the same number continue to be engaged.

The mothers also reported a growth in their level of confidence from the onset of the project and regular meetups are still being organised to continue the journey of change with them. Available graduates will return for the 2016 independent run of the project to buddy up and support the new batch of mothers undergoing the project.

For Empowering Mums 2, a similar schedule of support group work and self-improvement workshops will be run from November to December 2016 for the incoming participants with meals, transport and childminding provided. Where possible, content will be facilitated with the group in a sharing of skills and knowledge with graduate buddies and new participants to build their confidence and capacity. A structured curriculum featuring life skills and art lessons will also be imparted to the attending children.

It is hoped that by providing the Empowering Mums participants with the skills, support and chance they need and nurturing their confidence, they can secure better employment for themselves, becoming empowered to provide for and inspire their families. By creating a network of support for them, these many helping hands come together to reach out to our mothers and their multi-stress burdens can be better understood and alleviated, giving these women the boost they need to lift their families and enabling their children to have the brighter future they deserve.

Please contact Ms Ling Goh here or at 6223 1227 for more enquiries about the project and to partner us in this meaningful new initiative.
